چکیده

They are all, of course, ambiguous and homographic, though the indeterminacy here seems not to be more extreme than in the realm of traditional lexical items. My concern is with (a few of) the uses of these items on which they mark reliable intonational and semantic effects. In particular, I aim to identify cases where they serve as windows into multidimensional content in the sense of Potts 2005. The devices in (1a) are all available for isolating supplementary (appositive, parenthetical) material from the clauses that contain them (Potts 2005). In this paper, I look in particular at contrasting relative clauses cases like (2a, b), where the commas signal important features of the intended structure, meaning, and pronunciation.

Deriving Information Structure from Prosodically Marked Text with Lexicalized Tree Adjoining Grammars

This paper proposes a method for integrating intonation and information structure into the Lexicalized Tree Adjoining Grammar (LTAG) formalism. The method works fully within LTAG and requires no changes or additions to the basic formalism. From the existing CCG analysis, we denote boundary tones as lexical items and pitch accents as features of lexical items. We then show how prosodically marke...

Is Intonational Meaning Compositional ?

This paper addresses the issue of the contribution of intonation to the meaning of an utterance, and more precisely of the conditions that should be met to propose a compositional approach to the meaning of intonational contours. After presenting different positions in the literature and specifying if and how much these proposals can be said compositional, we show that their differences can be ...

Intonation as a Constraint on Inferential Processing

The proper role of intonation in utterance interpretation should be assessed in terms of the way that intonation interacts with other linguistic phenomena, notably with syntactic form and with grammatically encoded meaning, whether conceptual meaning of a compositional nature or procedural meaning that constrains the way in which an addressee will perform deductive inferences over conceptual re...
